Dallas Cowboys 2017 Draft Results – By Stephen Siracusa

Updated: May 1, 2017

The 2017 NFL Draft was held April 27 – 29, 2017.   The Dallas Cowboy’s strategy this year was to acquire athletes that would enhance their current defensive pool.  It was obvious in the 2016/2017 season that the defense was in need of some strengthening.  It was apparent when Tony Romo was hit and took what ended up being his career ending injury. The defense was struggling towards the end of the season and had a big role in the playoff lost to the Greenbay Packers.  The Cowboys would, however, pull together and come up with a highly successful season on the backs of the rookie Quarterback Dak Prescott and the rookie Running Back Ezekiel Elliott.
The Cowboy management realizes that the team is need of some depth as the 2017/2018 football season is quickly approaching.  It was easy to see from the picks that the Cowboys came away with from the draft that their goal is to beef up their defense this season.  They started out strong by getting Taco Charlton, DE from Michigan.  They followed up with their second pick with a CB from Colorado, Chidobe Awuzie.  Their third pick was once again a CB from Michigan, Jourdan Lewis.  Round 6 they took Safety Xavier Woods and CB Marquez White.  Round 7 the Cowboys added two more DTs to the team Joey Ivie and Jordan Carrell.  With all of this new talent to build from it is safe to say that the Cowboys should be able to fill some of the holes that were left from free agents leaving.

The most notable loss for the Cowboys last season was their high profile, long time quarterback Tony Romo.  There were a number of other losses that also left the Cowboys soft in the defensive area.  While there were a number of defensive picks in the draft there is still a need to pick up some experienced players to help round the team.  A few possibilities that could be brought in as CBs are Patrick Robinson or Brandon Flowers.

One thing is for sure with the seasoned rookies from last year and the new additions this year the Cowboys are sure to be a contender this year for the playoffs and beyond.
